Pink Eye Treatment
Are you worried that you may be dealing with pink eye? We can help you get the diagnosis and treatment you need at Alice Family Eye Center in Alice, TX. Before you make an appointment, learn more about the different types of infections and the various eye infection treatment options provided in detail by our professionals.
Experiencing Symptoms of Pink Eye
If you’re experiencing symptoms of pink eye, it’s essential to see your eye doctor as soon as possible. Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye infection that can cause redness, itchy eyes, and discharge in one or both eyes. There are several different types of pink eye, each with its own cause and treatment. Our professional eye doctor will thoroughly examine the underlying cause of your pink eye and recommend the best course of action to help you heal quickly.
Bacterial Pink Eye
Bacterial pink eye can be treated with antibiotics through eye drops or ointments. Our doctor may also prescribe oral antibiotics if the infection is severe. It’s vital to follow the optometrist’s instructions and complete the entire course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms improve before the medication is finished.
Viral Pink Eye
Viral pink eye is highly contagious and often spreads from person to person. There is no specific treatment for viral pink eye, but your doctor may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to help relieve symptoms. In most cases, viral pink eye will resolve on its own within a week or two.
Allergic Pink Eye
Allergic pink eye can be caused by pollen, pet dander, or dust. We may recommend antihistamine eye drops or over-the-counter oral antihistamines to help relieve symptoms.
Pink Eye Treatment at Home
In addition to medication, there are several steps you can take to help speed up the healing process and prevent the spread of pink eye. These include:
- Washing your hands frequently with soap and water
- Avoiding touching your eyes and face
- Not sharing towels, pillowcases, or other personal items
- Disposing of any used tissues immediately
If you wear contact lenses, switching to glasses is important until your pink eye has fully healed. Your eye doctor may also recommend that you throw away any disposable contact lenses and replace them with a fresh pair once you are symptom-free.
